Landscape design & installation in Boca Raton
Boca Raton is where much of our work is located, and most of our projects are inside private and deed-restricted communities — places with their own landscape rules, their own architectural review committees, and their own ideas of what a front garden should look like. We work across the country club communities in the west of the city, the waterfront communities to the east, and in the older neighborhoods near the center, where mature trees dictate what will grow underneath them.
What we know about planting in Boca Raton
- A large share of Boca Raton properties sit inside HOA or deed-restricted communities, many of which require landscape plans to be approved before work begins. Knowing what an architectural review committee will accept — and designing to it the first time — saves weeks of back and forth.
- The communities differ more than the map suggests. A country club community west of the turnpike, a waterfront lot on the Intracoastal and a 1920s house near the centre of the city impose three different sets of constraints: exposure, salt, canopy, lot size and the rules that come with the address.
- Waterfront and near-coastal properties are prone to salt burn, which narrows the plant selections. Species that thrive two miles inland can burn at the edges within a season on an exposed Intracoastal lot.
- Older neighborhoods have mature tree canopies, which changes the options of plant selections completely. Shade-tolerant underplanting is a very different situation than a open, sunny, new-build lot, and the same plant list will not serve both.
- Municipal landscape and tree codes apply to removals and replacements. Working with existing mature specimens, rather than clearing and starting over, is usually both less expensive and more attractive for a better result.
Gardens that suit the street they are on
Boca Raton has real architectural variety — Mizner-influenced houses, mid-century ranches, contemporary new builds, and the very different scale of the country club communities. A planting scheme that flatters one can look out of place in front of another.
We design for the house and the site, then select plants that will still look right when they have grown into the space.
Working inside a community with rules
In most gated communities, the design has to satisfy two audiences: the people who live there, and the HOA committee that approves it. Knowing that before drawing anything is the difference between a plan approved first time and a season lost to revisions.
Because we work across many of these communities, we usually know what a given committee has accepted before, and what it will send back.
